Hunterdon Land Trust farm market to be open one day a month this winter

Because your cravings for local food don’t end in the winter, now neither does the Hunterdon Land Trust Farmers Market.

Starting on Sunday, Dec. 18, the Farmers Market at the Dvoor Farm will be open during the winter for the first time. The producers-only market will open on the third Sunday of the month from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., December through April. Stay warm with a cup of hot tea or coffee while shopping for locally grown organic produce, artisan cheeses and breads, grass-fed meats, eggs, honey, wine, native wildflower seeds and teas as well as llama and alpaca products.

The market is on Route 12 at the Dvoor. In May, the farmers market will resume its usual weekly schedule.

Catherine Suttle, the market manager, says, “By preserving farmland, supporting farmers and giving people an opportunity to keep their dollars local the Hunterdon Land Trust is working to create a sustainable environment, community and economy throughout the county.”

“I’d like to thank the restaurants that are sponsoring (the winter market: the Lovin’ Oven in Frenchtown, the Ship Inn and the Milford Oyster House both located in Milford” said Suttle. “All three restaurants have a long history of supporting regional farmers by featuring local food. It is really exciting to see local restaurants and farmers working together to create not only great dining experiences but a sustainable food system right here in Hunterdon County.”

The farmers market “is such a gift to our community!” said Julie Klein, chef and co-owner of the Lovin’ Oven. “The Lovin’ Oven has close ties to many of the contributing farmers and producers, and we are thrilled that the winter market will allow them a place to shine all winter!”

At the winter market, Hunterdon Land Trust members will continue to receive a special weekly discount, and preorders will be accepted by several vendors but are not required. Visit hlta.org for details and contact information.

The Land Trust market welcomes volunteers or farmers interested in participating. To get involved, contact Catherine Suttle at 908-237-4582 or at Catherine@hlta.org.
